Summary
Thiazide-type diuretics can impair glucose tolerance and may modestly blunt the glucose-lowering effect of liraglutide. Fluid loss from vomiting or diarrhea caused by liraglutide can also add to diuretic-related volume depletion and renal risk.
What this interaction means in plain words
Chlorthalidone and Liraglutide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Chlorthalidone belongs to Cardiovascular; Liraglutide belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Thiazide-induced reduction in insulin sensitivity and secretion (partly via hypokalemia) opposes incretin-mediated glycemic control.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose or HbA1c when starting, stopping or changing the chlorthalidone dose and adjust antidiabetic therapy as needed. Counsel on hydration and review renal function if gastrointestinal losses occur.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
