Summary
Colestipol is a bile acid sequestrant that impairs absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamin K. Prolonged use may lower vitamin K status and, in susceptible patients, contribute to prolonged clotting times or bleeding.
What this interaction means in plain words
Colestipol and Vitamin k1 can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Colestipol belongs to Cardiovascular; Vitamin k1 belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Colestipol binds bile acids in the gut, reducing micelle formation and absorption of oral vitamin K.
What to do
Give oral vitamin K at least 4 hours before or after colestipol. Monitor INR or prothrombin time in patients on long-term colestipol or with other risk factors for deficiency.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
