Summary
Heparins, including low molecular weight heparins, can suppress aldosterone secretion and cause hyperkalemia, which is more likely when combined with an angiotensin receptor blocker. The thiazide component partly offsets this, but the risk remains in patients with renal impairment or diabetes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dalteparin and Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dalteparin belongs to Cardiovascular; Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin-induced inhibition of adrenal aldosterone synthesis added to reduced aldosterone effect from angiotensin receptor blockade.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium, particularly in patients with renal impairment, diabetes or treatment longer than a few days. Adjust therapy if hyperkalemia develops.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
