Summary
Heparins, including low molecular weight heparins, can suppress aldosterone production and cause hyperkalemia. With an ACE inhibitor, which also reduces aldosterone, the risk of raised potassium increases, especially in renal impairment or diabetes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dalteparin and Moexipril can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dalteparin belongs to Cardiovascular; Moexipril belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin inhibits adrenal aldosterone synthesis, adding to the reduced aldosterone effect from ACE inhibition.
What to do
Check serum potassium before and during prolonged dalteparin use with an ACE inhibitor, particularly in patients with renal impairment or diabetes. Treat hyperkalemia if it develops and review the need for either drug.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
