Summary
Heparins, including low molecular weight heparins, suppress adrenal aldosterone secretion and can cause hyperkalemia. With valsartan, which also reduces aldosterone effect, the risk of elevated potassium increases, especially in renal impairment or diabetes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dalteparin and Valsartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dalteparin belongs to Cardiovascular; Valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive suppression of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone axis leads to potassium retention.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and renal function, particularly with prolonged dalteparin therapy or in high-risk patients.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
