Summary
Tricyclic antidepressants can block entry of guanethidine-like antihypertensives into adrenergic neurons. Debrisoquine may therefore lose its blood pressure lowering effect, leading to poor hypertension control.
What this interaction means in plain words
Debrisoquine and Trimipramine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Trimipramine inhibits the neuronal amine uptake pump needed for debrisoquine to reach its site of action.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure when starting or stopping trimipramine. Consider a different antihypertensive class if control is lost.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
