Summary
High-dose penicillin G can cause hypokalemia through delivery of a nonreabsorbable anion to the distal nephron, which increases potassium loss. Deflazacort, a corticosteroid, has mineralocorticoid activity that can also lower potassium, so the effects may add together.
What this interaction means in plain words
Deflazacort and Penicillin g can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Deflazacort belongs to Miscellaneous; Penicillin g belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Additive renal potassium wasting from penicillin G and corticosteroid mineralocorticoid effect.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium during high-dose penicillin G therapy with deflazacort and replace potassium as needed.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
