Summary

Tricyclics may potentiate the cardiovascular effects of direct beta-agonist sympathomimetics, increasing the risk of tachycardia and arrhythmias. The effect is less pronounced than with norepinephrine or epinephrine because isoproterenol is not taken up by neuronal reuptake.

What this interaction means in plain words

Desipramine and Isoproterenol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Desipramine belongs to Central Nervous System; Isoproterenol belongs to Respiratory.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Altered adrenergic sensitivity and tricyclic effects on catecholamine disposition; the mechanism is incompletely established.

What to do

Monitor heart rate, blood pressure and ECG during isoproterenol use, and titrate to the lowest effective dose.

What to ask your pharmacist
