Summary
Dextroamphetamine releases endogenous catecholamines and adds to the adrenergic effects of infused dopamine. The combination can cause marked rises in blood pressure and heart rate and may provoke tachyarrhythmias or myocardial ischemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dextroamphetamine and Dopamine can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Dextroamphetamine belongs to Central Nervous System; Dopamine belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive sympathomimetic activity, with amphetamine-induced catecholamine release and reuptake blockade potentiating dopamine's effects.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, heart rate and ECG continuously and titrate dopamine to the lowest effective dose. Hold the amphetamine if hypertension or arrhythmia develops.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
