Summary

Flibanserin and diazepam both cause sedation, somnolence and impaired alertness, so the combination can produce additive CNS depression. Diazepam is also a weak CYP3A4 inhibitor, which could modestly raise flibanserin exposure and add to dizziness, syncope and sedation.

What this interaction means in plain words

Diazepam and Flibanserin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Diazepam belongs to Musculoskeletal; Flibanserin belongs to Genitourinary.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive CNS depression, plus possible minor CYP3A4 inhibition by diazepam raising flibanserin levels.

What to do

Counsel the patient about additive drowsiness and advise against driving or hazardous activities until the response is known. Consider a lower benzodiazepine dose or an alternative, and monitor for excessive sedation or hypotension.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
