Summary
Squill contains cardiac glycosides (scilliroside-type bufadienolides) with digoxin-like activity. Combined use produces additive effects and a high risk of digitalis toxicity, including arrhythmias, nausea and visual disturbances.
What this interaction means in plain words
Digoxin and Squill are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Additive inhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase from the glycosides in squill and digoxin.
What to do
Avoid squill in patients taking digoxin. If exposure has occurred, check digoxin level, potassium and ECG.
