Summary
Both drugs depress the central nervous system, so taking them together can produce more drowsiness, slowed reaction time and impaired psychomotor performance than either drug alone. Dimenhydrinate also has anticholinergic activity that may add to that of perphenazine.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dimenhydrinate and Perphenazine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dimenhydrinate belongs to Respiratory; Perphenazine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive CNS depression from sedating antihistamine and phenothiazine antipsychotic activity, with additive anticholinergic effects.
What to do
Warn the patient about sedation and avoid driving or operating machinery until the response is known. Reduce the dose or choose a non-sedating antiemetic if excessive drowsiness or anticholinergic effects occur.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
