Summary

What this interaction means in plain words

Dobutamine and Ephedrine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Dobutamine belongs to Cardiovascular; Ephedrine belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive sympathomimetic effects: direct beta agonism by dobutamine and mixed direct and indirect release of norepinephrine by ephedrine.

What to do

Monitor blood pressure, heart rate, ECG and potassium, and titrate each agent to the lowest effective dose. Reduce doses if tachyarrhythmia or hypertension develops.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
