Summary
Efavirenz and ritonavir-boosted tipranavir affect each other's CYP3A4 metabolism in opposite directions, so net exposure of either drug can change unpredictably. Both are antiretrovirals that can also be linked with immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome when therapy is started.
What this interaction means in plain words
Efavirenz and Tipranavir can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Efavirenz belongs to Anti Virals; Tipranavir belongs to Anti Virals.
Why it happens
Mixed CYP3A4 induction by efavirenz and inhibition/induction by tipranavir/ritonavir alters concentrations of both drugs.
What to do
If combined, monitor HIV viral load and tipranavir trough levels where available, plus liver enzymes and lipids. Watch for inflammatory symptoms in the first weeks of therapy.
What to ask your pharmacist
