Summary
Gentamicin is nephrotoxic and, together with a thiazide and an ARB, volume depletion and altered renal hemodynamics may increase the risk of acute kidney injury and aminoglycoside accumulation. Gentamicin can also cause renal magnesium and potassium wasting, adding to thiazide-induced electrolyte loss.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide and Gentamicin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Gentamicin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Aminoglycoside tubular toxicity is compounded by diuretic-induced volume depletion and reduced glomerular perfusion from angiotensin receptor blockade, with additive renal electrolyte losses.
What to do
Monitor serum creatinine, potassium and magnesium, and gentamicin levels where available. Consider temporarily withholding the diuretic and ARB during acute illness or high-dose aminoglycoside therapy.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?

Frequently asked questions
Can I take Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide with Gentamicin?
MediHelp rates the interaction as moderate. Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide and Gentamicin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
How serious is the interaction between Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide and Gentamicin?
MediHelp rates it moderate, on a four-level scale (minor, moderate, major, contraindicated) based on published labels and references. What to do, in brief: Monitor serum creatinine, potassium and magnesium, and gentamicin levels where available. Consider temporarily withholding the diuretic and ARB during acute illness or high-dose aminoglycoside therapy.
