Summary
Estrogens can impair glucose tolerance and may weaken the glycemic control achieved with exenatide. If an oral estradiol product is used, slowed gastric emptying from exenatide could also alter its absorption rate, though the clinical significance is likely small.
What this interaction means in plain words
Estradiol and Exenatide have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Estradiol belongs to Endocrine; Exenatide belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Estrogens may reduce insulin sensitivity, opposing exenatide, and exenatide delays gastric emptying which may slow oral drug absorption.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose when starting, stopping or changing estradiol dose. Take oral estradiol at least 1 hour before exenatide if absorption timing is a concern.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
