Summary
Drospirenone has antimineralocorticoid, potassium-sparing activity, and ACE inhibitors reduce aldosterone secretion. Together they can raise serum potassium, which in susceptible patients such as those with renal impairment or diabetes may cause hyperkalemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ethinyl estradiol-drospirenone and Moexipril can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ethinyl estradiol-drospirenone belongs to Endocrine; Moexipril belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive potassium retention from drospirenone's aldosterone antagonism and ACE inhibitor suppression of aldosterone.
What to do
Check serum potassium during the first cycle of combined use and periodically thereafter, especially with renal impairment; consider a different contraceptive if potassium rises.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
