ethinyl estradiol/gestodene + fluconazole
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Fluconazole can increase ethinyl estradiol and gestodene exposure, potentially increasing estrogen/progestin‑related adverse effects; contraceptive efficacy is not reduced.
Mechanism of action
Moderate CYP3A4 (and CYP2C9) inhibition by fluconazole reduces metabolism of ethinyl estradiol and gestodene → increased hormone levels.
Clinical management
No routine dose change or backup contraception. For single 150 mg dose, monitor for estrogen/progestin adverse effects (nausea, headache, breast tenderness). If prolonged/high‑dose fluconazole (≥200 mg/day), consider closer monitoring for VTE symptoms.
