Summary
Etravirine is a CYP3A4 inducer and may lower nilotinib concentrations, risking reduced antileukemic efficacy. Nilotinib may in turn raise etravirine levels through CYP3A4 and CYP2C inhibition. The net effect is chiefly a possible loss of nilotinib response.
What this interaction means in plain words
Etravirine and Nilotinib can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Etravirine belongs to Anti Virals; Nilotinib belongs to Oncology.
Why it happens
Etravirine induces CYP3A4, increasing nilotinib metabolism, while nilotinib inhibits CYP3A4 and CYP2C enzymes involved in etravirine clearance.
What to do
Monitor molecular response to nilotinib and consider therapeutic drug monitoring where available. Consider an alternative antiretroviral without inducing effects if response is inadequate.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?

Frequently asked questions
Can I take Etravirine with Nilotinib?
MediHelp rates the interaction as moderate. Etravirine and Nilotinib can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
How serious is the interaction between Etravirine and Nilotinib?
MediHelp rates it moderate, on a four-level scale (minor, moderate, major, contraindicated) based on published labels and references. What to do, in brief: Monitor molecular response to nilotinib and consider therapeutic drug monitoring where available. Consider an alternative antiretroviral without inducing effects if response is inadequate.
