Summary

Etravirine is a modest inducer of CYP3A4 and may slightly reduce exposure to drugs partly cleared by that enzyme. Pioglitazone is metabolized mainly by CYP2C8 with a smaller CYP3A4 contribution, so a meaningful loss of glycemic effect is unlikely.

What this interaction means in plain words

Etravirine and Pioglitazone have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Etravirine belongs to Anti Virals; Pioglitazone belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Etravirine induction of CYP3A4 may modestly increase pioglitazone metabolism.

What to do

No dose change is usually needed; check glycemic control (glucose, HbA1c) if therapy is started or stopped.
