Summary

Everolimus is immunosuppressive and may blunt the immune response to vaccines. Live vaccine strains can also replicate unchecked and cause disseminated vaccine-strain infection in immunosuppressed patients.

What this interaction means in plain words

Everolimus and Rotavirus oral vaccine live are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Immunosuppression by mTOR inhibition impairs vaccine-induced immunity and allows replication of live attenuated organisms.

What to do

Avoid live vaccines during everolimus therapy, and complete required vaccinations before starting treatment where feasible. Follow current immunization guidance on the interval after stopping everolimus.
