Summary
Both drugs can prolong the QT interval, so combining them may increase the chance of ventricular arrhythmias including torsades de pointes. Hydroxyzine also adds sedation and confusion on top of ezogabine's CNS effects.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ezogabine and Hydroxyzine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ezogabine belongs to Central Nervous System; Hydroxyzine belongs to Respiratory.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation through delayed cardiac repolarization, plus additive CNS depression.
What to do
Check a baseline ECG and electrolytes, and monitor the QTc during ezogabine titration. Use the lowest effective hydroxyzine dose or an alternative antihistamine if the QTc lengthens.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
