Summary

Fenfluramine is contraindicated with MAO inhibitors because serotonin accumulation can cause serotonin syndrome. Hypertensive reactions are also possible.

What this interaction means in plain words

Fenfluramine and Selegiline are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Fenfluramine belongs to Central Nervous System; Selegiline belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Fenfluramine increases synaptic serotonin release and MAO inhibition blocks serotonin degradation, producing additive serotonergic toxicity.

What to do

Do not use together; wait at least 14 days after stopping an MAO inhibitor before starting fenfluramine, and 14 days after stopping fenfluramine before an MAO inhibitor.
