For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Summary

Tipranavir is given with ritonavir, which inhibits CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 and raises flecainide levels. This can cause QRS and QT prolongation and serious ventricular arrhythmias. Labeling contraindicates ritonavir-boosted tipranavir with flecainide.

What this interaction means in plain words

Flecainide and Tipranavir are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Flecainide belongs to Cardiovascular; Tipranavir belongs to Anti Virals.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Ritonavir-boosted inhibition of CYP2D6 reduces flecainide metabolism, increasing exposure.

What to do

Do not co-administer; choose another antiarrhythmic or antiretroviral regimen.
