Summary

Flibanserin inhibits intestinal P-glycoprotein and may raise quinine exposure, and quinine is a narrow-therapeutic-index drug with dose-related toxicity such as cinchonism and QT prolongation. Quinine is also a weak CYP3A4 inhibitor, which could modestly raise flibanserin levels and its sedative and hypotensive effects.

What this interaction means in plain words

Flibanserin and Quinine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Flibanserin belongs to Genitourinary; Quinine belongs to Anti Parasitic.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Flibanserin inhibits P-glycoprotein, and quinine weakly inhibits CYP3A4, so each may raise the other's exposure.

What to do

Monitor for quinine toxicity (tinnitus, QT prolongation, arrhythmia) and for flibanserin-related dizziness, sedation and hypotension. Consider ECG monitoring if other QT-prolonging drugs are present.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
