Summary
Corticosteroids with fluoroquinolones raise the risk of tendon injury, but fludrocortisone is mainly mineralocorticoid and used at low doses, so the tendon risk is probably lower. Fludrocortisone can also cause hypokalemia, which may add to moxifloxacin QT risk.
What this interaction means in plain words
Fludrocortisone and Moxifloxacin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Fludrocortisone belongs to Endocrine; Moxifloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Possible additive tendon toxicity from corticosteroid effects, plus fludrocortisone-induced potassium loss potentiating QT prolongation.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and counsel the patient to report tendon pain promptly. Stop moxifloxacin if tendon symptoms occur.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
