Summary
Corticosteroids given with neuromuscular blocking agents have been linked to acute myopathy and prolonged weakness, mostly in critically ill patients on prolonged therapy. Fludrocortisone has predominantly mineralocorticoid activity, so the myopathy risk is less well established than with glucocorticoids. It can also cause hypokalemia, which alters neuromuscular blockade.
What this interaction means in plain words
Fludrocortisone and Succinylcholine have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Fludrocortisone belongs to Endocrine; Succinylcholine belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Corticosteroid-associated myopathy may add to neuromuscular blockade, and mineralocorticoid-induced potassium loss may change the response to depolarizing blockers.
What to do
Check serum potassium before anesthesia and correct hypokalemia. Monitor neuromuscular function and watch for prolonged weakness after recovery.
