Summary
Imatinib inhibits CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 and may modestly raise fluoxetine exposure. Fluoxetine is itself a CYP2D6 and CYP2C19 inhibitor and may affect imatinib, so adverse effects of either drug could increase. Both drugs can also have QT effects.
What this interaction means in plain words
Fluoxetine and Imatinib can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Fluoxetine belongs to Central Nervous System; Imatinib belongs to Oncology.
Why it happens
Imatinib inhibition of CYP2D6/CYP3A4 reduces fluoxetine metabolism, with possible additive QT effects.
What to do
Monitor for fluoxetine adverse effects such as nausea, agitation and tremor, and for imatinib toxicity. Consider an ECG in patients with cardiac risk factors.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
