Summary
NSAIDs can blunt the diuretic and natriuretic response to loop diuretics such as torsemide. In susceptible patients, such as those with heart failure, cirrhosis, or renal impairment, the combination may cause fluid retention and worsen kidney function.
What this interaction means in plain words
Flurbiprofen and Torsemide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Flurbiprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal; Torsemide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis reduces renal blood flow and sodium excretion, counteracting loop diuretic effect.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, body weight, edema and renal function when starting or stopping the NSAID. Increase the diuretic dose if response is diminished, or use the shortest possible NSAID course.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
