Summary
Corticosteroids can weaken vascular integrity and irritate the gastric mucosa, which may increase bleeding risk in patients receiving an anticoagulant. Intramuscular or intra-articular injection in an anticoagulated patient may also cause local hematoma. The clinical effect on anticoagulation itself is inconsistent.
What this interaction means in plain words
Fondaparinux and Triamcinolone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Fondaparinux belongs to Cardiovascular; Triamcinolone belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Pharmacodynamic: corticosteroid effects on vascular fragility and gastric mucosa add to fondaparinux-mediated factor Xa inhibition.
What to do
Monitor for signs of bleeding and consider gastroprotection if systemic steroid exposure is prolonged. Use caution with deep intramuscular injections and monitor anti-Xa or bleeding parameters as clinically indicated.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
