Summary

Foscarnet can prolong the QT interval and causes electrolyte disturbances such as hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia and hypokalemia. Together with solifenacin, this increases the risk of ventricular arrhythmia.

What this interaction means in plain words

Foscarnet and Solifenacin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Foscarnet belongs to Anti Virals; Solifenacin belongs to Genitourinary.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive QT prolongation, with foscarnet-induced electrolyte depletion as an amplifier.

What to do

Monitor electrolytes and replace deficits during foscarnet therapy, and check the ECG. Hold solifenacin if QTc prolongation develops.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
