Summary
Concurrent corticosteroid and fluoroquinolone use increases the risk of tendinopathy and tendon rupture, notably of the Achilles tendon. The risk is greater in older patients, those on higher steroid doses and transplant recipients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Gemifloxacin and Prednisolone can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Gemifloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Prednisolone belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Both drugs have adverse effects on tendon collagen and tenocytes, producing additive tendon toxicity.
What to do
Avoid the combination where an alternative antibiotic is suitable, especially in older patients. If used, stop gemifloxacin and rest the limb at the first sign of tendon pain.
What to ask your pharmacist
