Summary
Both drugs can prolong the QTc interval, so giving them together may add to the risk of ventricular arrhythmias including torsades de pointes. The risk is higher with electrolyte disturbance, bradycardia or structural heart disease.
What this interaction means in plain words
Gemifloxacin and Telavancin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Gemifloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Telavancin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Additive prolongation of cardiac repolarization (QTc) through pharmacodynamic effects.
What to do
Obtain a baseline ECG and correct potassium and magnesium before starting. Monitor the QTc during co-administration and prefer a non-QT-prolonging alternative in patients with other risk factors.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
