Summary
Pegvisomant blocks growth hormone action, which can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce glucose levels in acromegaly. Patients on glyburide may therefore have lower glucose and a higher risk of hypoglycemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Glibenclamide and Pegvisomant can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Glibenclamide belongs to Endocrine; Pegvisomant belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Growth hormone receptor antagonism reduces insulin resistance, adding to the glucose-lowering effect of the sulfonylurea.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose when pegvisomant is started or the dose changed. Reduce the glyburide dose if hypoglycemia occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
