Summary
Histrelin, a GnRH agonist, produces androgen deprivation that can lengthen the QT interval. Levofloxacin also prolongs QT, so the combination may increase the risk of arrhythmia, mainly in patients with cardiac disease or electrolyte abnormalities.
What this interaction means in plain words
Histrelin and Levofloxacin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Histrelin belongs to Musculoskeletal; Levofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation; androgen deprivation from GnRH agonists adds to the direct effect of fluoroquinolones on repolarization.
What to do
Review other QT risk factors and correct electrolyte disturbances. Obtain an ECG in patients with cardiac risk factors, or choose a non-QT-prolonging antibiotic.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
