Summary

Hydrochlorothiazide lowers serum potassium while potassium phosphate supplements raise it, so the effects partly offset each other. Dosing may be intentionally combined to prevent hypokalaemia, but excess potassium can cause hyperkalaemia, especially in renal impairment.

What this interaction means in plain words

Hydrochlorothiazide and Potassium acid can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Opposing effects on serum potassium: thiazide-induced renal potassium loss versus potassium supplementation.

What to do

Monitor serum potassium and renal function, and titrate the supplement to the measured level.
