Summary
Xipamide is a thiazide-like diuretic, so adding it to hydrochlorothiazide duplicates therapy. This can cause excessive diuresis, volume depletion, hypokalemia, hyponatremia and hypotension.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydrochlorothiazide and Xipamide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive inhibition of the distal tubular sodium-chloride transporter, increasing sodium and potassium loss.
What to do
Avoid routine use of two thiazide-type agents together. If used deliberately, monitor electrolytes, renal function and blood pressure closely.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
