Summary
Beta-2 agonists and thiazide diuretics can each lower serum potassium. Together they may cause clinically important hypokalemia, particularly with high doses of the beta agonist, and can promote arrhythmias.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydrochlorothiazide-irbesartan and Levalbuterol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Beta-2 stimulation shifts potassium into cells while thiazides increase renal potassium loss, giving additive hypokalemia.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium in patients using frequent or high-dose levalbuterol. Replace potassium as needed.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
