Summary
Oxaprozin can diminish the antihypertensive effect of losartan and hydrochlorothiazide. The combination of an NSAID, ARB and diuretic also increases the risk of acute kidney injury and hyperkalemia, especially in older or volume depleted patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydrochlorothiazide-losartan and Oxaprozin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Hydrochlorothiazide-losartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Oxaprozin belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis reduces renal perfusion and sodium excretion, opposing ARB and diuretic effects.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium and keep patients well hydrated. Use the lowest effective NSAID dose for the shortest time or choose an alternative analgesic.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
