For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Summary

Potassium iodide supplies a potassium load, and telmisartan limits potassium elimination, so hyperkalemia is possible, especially with renal impairment or prolonged use. At typical short-course or low doses the potassium amount is small, so the risk is mostly in susceptible patients. Hydrochlorothiazide partly counteracts this.

What this interaction means in plain words

Hydrochlorothiazide-telmisartan and Potassium iodide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Hydrochlorothiazide-telmisartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Potassium iodide belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive potassium load with reduced renal potassium excretion from angiotensin receptor blockade.

What to do

Monitor serum potassium if potassium iodide is given repeatedly or at high doses, particularly in patients with reduced renal function.
