For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Summary

Succinylcholine can cause a transient rise in serum potassium, particularly in patients with burns, denervation or prolonged immobilisation. Telmisartan reduces potassium excretion, whereas hydrochlorothiazide tends to lower it, so the net effect is unpredictable. Hyperkalemia during anesthesia could lead to arrhythmias.

What this interaction means in plain words

Hydrochlorothiazide-telmisartan and Succinylcholine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Hydrochlorothiazide-telmisartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Succinylcholine belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Succinylcholine depolarisation releases potassium from muscle, adding to angiotensin receptor blocker-related potassium retention, partly offset by thiazide kaliuresis.

What to do

Check serum potassium and renal function before surgery and correct abnormalities. Monitor ECG and potassium during and after succinylcholine administration.

What to ask your pharmacist
