Summary
Combining a loop diuretic with a thiazide-containing product produces strong diuresis and can cause hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hypovolemia and hypotension. Adding valsartan may increase the risk of renal function decline when volume depleted.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan and Torsemide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Torsemide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Sequential nephron blockade by loop and thiazide diuretics produces additive natriuresis and potassium loss, with ARB reducing glomerular perfusion pressure.
What to do
Monitor electrolytes, creatinine, volume status and blood pressure, particularly in the first weeks. Reduce diuretic doses if hypovolemia or electrolyte disturbance occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
