Summary

Rasagiline is a selective MAO-B inhibitor and can lose selectivity at higher doses. Opioid combinations with MAOIs may cause additive CNS depression, hypotension or serotonergic reactions, although hydromorphone has little serotonergic activity.

What this interaction means in plain words

Hydromorphone and Rasagiline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Hydromorphone belongs to Musculoskeletal; Rasagiline belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

MAO inhibition may potentiate opioid sedative and hypotensive effects; the mechanism is not fully established.

What to do

Start hydromorphone at a low dose and titrate carefully while monitoring blood pressure, sedation and signs of serotonin toxicity. Avoid rasagiline doses above the recommended range.

What to ask your pharmacist
