Summary
Ibuprofen can weaken the blood-pressure-lowering effect of losartan and increase the risk of acute kidney injury, especially in elderly, dehydrated or renally impaired patients. Hyperkalemia may also occur.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ibuprofen and Losartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ibuprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal; Losartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
NSAIDs reduce renal prostaglandin-mediated afferent dilation while ARBs dilate the efferent arteriole, lowering glomerular filtration; NSAIDs also promote sodium retention and hyperkalemia.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium, maintain hydration, and avoid regular NSAID use in high-risk patients.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
