Summary
Levofloxacin can prolong the QT interval, and salbutamol may contribute through hypokalemia and increased heart rate. Together they may increase the risk of torsades de pointes, especially in patients with heart disease, electrolyte abnormalities or other QT-prolonging drugs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ipratropium-salbutamol and Levofloxacin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ipratropium-salbutamol belongs to Respiratory; Levofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation, with beta-2 agonist-induced hypokalemia.
What to do
Correct potassium and magnesium deficits and obtain an ECG when other QT risk factors exist. Consider a non-QT-prolonging antibiotic in high-risk patients.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
