Summary
Both salbutamol (a beta-2 agonist) and tetrabenazine can prolong the QT interval, and beta-agonists may also cause hypokalemia and tachycardia. Combined use may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias, especially at high salbutamol doses or in patients with other risk factors.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ipratropium-salbutamol and Tetrabenazine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ipratropium-salbutamol belongs to Respiratory; Tetrabenazine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation through pharmacodynamic effects, with beta-agonist-induced hypokalemia as a possible contributor.
What to do
Use the lowest effective salbutamol dose and obtain a baseline ECG in patients with cardiac risk factors. Monitor potassium and correct any deficit.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
