Summary
Rifampicin strongly induces CYP3A4 and dramatically lowers isavuconazole exposure after isavuconazonium administration. This risks failure of therapy for invasive fungal infection.
What this interaction means in plain words
Isavuconazonium and Rifampicin are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Isavuconazonium belongs to Anti Fungals; Rifampicin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Potent induction of CYP3A4/5 by rifampicin increases isavuconazole clearance.
What to do
Do not coadminister; use an alternative antimycobacterial agent or antifungal.
