Summary

Tricyclic-type antidepressants can enhance the cardiovascular effects of adrenergic agents, and isoproterenol may cause greater tachycardia and arrhythmia in patients taking maprotiline. Because isoproterenol is a direct beta agonist not reliant on neuronal reuptake, the potentiation is likely smaller than with norepinephrine or epinephrine.

What this interaction means in plain words

Isoproterenol and Maprotiline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Isoproterenol belongs to Respiratory; Maprotiline belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive adrenergic cardiovascular stimulation and sensitization of adrenergic receptors; the mechanism is not fully established for this agent.

What to do

Use the lowest effective isoproterenol dose and monitor heart rate, blood pressure and ECG continuously.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
