Summary
Oral magnesium salts (antacids, laxatives, supplements) bind levofloxacin in the gut and reduce how much is absorbed. This can lower antibiotic concentrations enough to cause treatment failure or promote resistance.
What this interaction means in plain words
Levofloxacin and Magnesium can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Levofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Magnesium belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.
Why it happens
Divalent magnesium cations chelate the fluoroquinolone in the gastrointestinal tract, forming poorly absorbed complexes.
What to do
Give oral levofloxacin at least 2 hours before or after magnesium-containing products. Separate doses consistently throughout the course of therapy.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
