Summary
SNRIs reduce platelet serotonin uptake and impair platelet aggregation, and NSAIDs add antiplatelet effects and gastric mucosal injury. The combination raises the risk of bleeding, notably upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
What this interaction means in plain words
Levomilnacipran and Meclofenamic acid can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Levomilnacipran belongs to Central Nervous System; Meclofenamic acid belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Additive impairment of platelet function: depletion of platelet serotonin by SNRI plus NSAID COX-1 inhibition and mucosal injury.
What to do
Monitor for GI bleeding and bruising, and consider a proton pump inhibitor in higher-risk patients. Use the lowest NSAID dose for the shortest period or choose paracetamol.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
